Every sentence makes a choice about who is centered, who is invisible, and who is stereotyped, and our choices can subtly build or dissolve reader trust. Misused, outdated, or careless language can signal contempt or indifference, alienating exactly the audiences we hope to reach, no matter how strong our story is.
I will share a personal story of ‘Brave.’ Two years ago, I went through a period of personal loss and breakdown. I have stared down many dragons in my life, but this was the lowest low; I could not find calmness, confidence, or self-love beneath the pain and distress.
I reflect on how the first two years of the Project have changed people’s lives, ways to use the Journal, and more satisfactions. One of the great joys of launching this project was receiving generous support from some of our 2020 Kickstarter funders, who helped us give back.
